AI & Future-Ready Leadership

Why is identity becoming leader’s most important capability in the age of AI?

Updated September 24, 2026

Identity is becoming the defining leadership capability in the age of AI because AI is the first major disruption that directly challenges what a senior leader is for. Previous disruptions changed how work was done. AI is changing who the leader needs to be. The expertise that used to confer authority is no longer scarce. The decisions that used to require seniority are now made faster by systems. The people a leader manages are sometimes more capable with AI tools than the leader themselves. That combination creates identity-level pressure at the top of organizations.

What we observe consistently in our work at OSC is that leaders do not rise to the level of their newest training under pressure, they fall to the level of their oldest patterns. The leader who has always over-functioned under stress will over-function. The leader who has always needed to be the expert will struggle when they can no longer be. AI does not create these patterns; it magnifies them. Leaders who have done the work of understanding their own identity, what drives them, what threatens them, how their past shapes the way they lead, are significantly more effective through this kind of disruption. That is the work the Origins Map™ is designed to support.
