Executive Coaching Fundamentals

What is the difference between executive coaching and leadership development?

Updated July 30, 2026

Executive coaching is an individual engagement designed around one leader’s specific patterns, goals and context. Leadership development programs are broader in scope, building capability across a cohort of leaders through structured workshops, modules and applied learning. Both approaches are valuable, and the choice between them depends on what the organization is trying to achieve. Many organizations find the greatest impact comes from combining both: individual coaching to create personal insight and behavioral change, alongside a wider learning journey that builds shared frameworks and collective capability. OSC designs programs that integrate both, ensuring individual and systemic development reinforce each other.
