Executive Coaching Fundamentals

What is executive coaching and how is it different from mentoring?

Updated July 30, 2026

Executive coaching is a structured developmental engagement. It helps leaders shift the patterns, mindsets and assumptions that shape how they lead, particularly under pressure. Mentoring typically involves a more experienced person sharing knowledge and advice from their own career.

Coaching works differently: it does not rely on the coach’s expertise in the leader’s field. OSC’s coaches work from a foundation of developmental psychology and applied neurOSCience. They use the Origins Map™ to help leaders navigate their own inner architecture. The goal is not to prescribe solutions, but to build the self-awareness and capacity to find and sustain them.
